"Entrepreneurs experience the highest highs and the lowest lows (sometimes in the same day); events reverse themselves at such speeds that they can easily shred a person’s psyche. The issues range across customers, products, technical programs, competitors, employees, and investors ." (see Rule No. 58) "There is a fine line between self confidence and arrogance; an entrepreneur must walk that fine line, falling on neither side but right in the middle ." (see Rule No.3) "I wish I had had this book as I started and built companies over the years. It would have been an invaluable resource. It is wisdom, concisely and accurately presented, that takes years to accumulate and should be required reading for every entrepreneur." Rodney Perkins, MD, Silicon Valley serial entrepreneur: Cohesion, Collagen, DFine, Earlens, Laserscope, Novacept, Pulmonics, Resound, Sound ID, and Surgerex. The Effective Entrepreneur is the first compendium of value-building principles specifically designed for entrepreneurs and sequenced according to the company’s growth cycle. The 59 rules are organized around the four chronological stages of emerging enterprise evolution in the order a manager might experience them. Inception-recognizing successful start-up alchemy; looking in the mirror for strengths, self-confidence, and leadership; developing business plans and models; leading innovation; and establishing a culture of excellence and integrity. Development-selecting and organizing managers, teams and boards; creating strategy with vitality; building barriers to entry; and succeeding in negotiations. Growth-managing through economic cycles with a global outlook; financing with debt, equity, or corporate partners;and understanding communications basics. Maturity-supervising service providers; determining valuation as a function of timing; and formulating efficacious acquisition integration plans and realistic post acquisition commitments. "A small, well organized team with clear objectives can always defeat a large, poorly organized or contentious army. The more senior the manager, the more time he/she should spend being proactive on human resources issues ." (see Rule No.12)" The Effective Entrepreneur should be required reading for all entrepreneurs." Ken Wilcox, Ph.D., CEO and President of SVB Financial Group.

Written with the cooperation of Harvard Business School, an instructive and inspiring book for anyone who dreams of starting a highly profitable business In 1998, three Harvard Business School graduates two men and one woman turned down six-figure salaries at big corporations, bet on themselves, and launched their own new companies. By their ten-year reunion, their audacity had paid huge dividends. They’d made many millions of dollars, created hundreds of jobs and left their mark on the world. Based on dozens of interviews with highly successful entrepreneurs, Harvard Business School professors, and HBS alumni, The Intelligent Entrepreneur tells the compelling and instructive story of how these three young founders developed ideas, assembled teams, built ventures, and achieved their dreams. Along the way, they learned that starting great companies requires much more than a ferocious work ethic or good timing. Their hard-won insights distilled into ten key rules will help anyone become a successful entrepreneur. What they teach you at Harvard Business School is that intelligent entrepreneurship can be learned. In that spirit, Bill Murphy Jr. uses a unique combination of vivid storytelling and lucid instruction to show would-be entrepreneurs how to improve their odds of creating dynamic, lasting businesses.

401 Questions Every Entrepreneur Should Ask

401 Questions Every Entrepreneur Should Ask

$1.85

There is little job security left in Corporate America. International competition is ravaging our mainline companies, Wall Street is rewarding companies that “streamline” (read: cut staff), and we are now “outsourcing” even white-collar jobs to India and China. Those seeking a way out of this dilemma must risk more than ever in these turbulent economic times. Which is why both beginning and seasoned entrepreneurs need 401 Questions Every Entrepreneur Should Ask, an invaluable, comprehensive reference resource.Jim Silvester brings 27 years of professional and educational experience to this work. 401 Questions Every Entrepreneur Should Ask reviews 25 functional areas of operation of the typical entrepreneurial firm. It then poses the hundreds of questions any entrepreneur should ask, the answers to which will essentially create an “operational X-ray” of your business operation. After posing a question, Silvester explains its importance to the overall health of your company, discusses the business consequences of a negative answer, then instructs you on how to correct or avoid the unwanted consequences. You’ll learn the need to ask questions such as:Do you have a written statement of your company’s mission or purpose? How do you predict future developments in your industry?Have you planned for technological changes that may affect your business? How do you stay on top of cash flow? How involved are your managers in planning, operations, and finances?Do you have someone ready to take your place in case of an emergency?

An examination of entrepreneurial intentions of university students.

$49.99

Through the use of a survey that used the combination of seven self report instruments at a major mid-western US university, this cross-sectional study of 311 (52.1% male) business and education students investigated the relationship between the Big Five personality traits, curiosity, risk taking, entrepreneurial orientation, creativity, and intention to become an entrepreneur. The correlational analyses demonstrated moderate, positive and statistically significant relations between risk taking, entrepreneurial orientation, creativity and intention to become an entrepreneur. After statistically controlling for salient background variables (age, gender, college major), the hierarchical analyses revealed that extraversion, emotional stability, and openness to experience, risk taking, and creativity predicted unique variance in the dependent variable ( R = 45.3%). Risk taking and creativity contributed most to the regression equation. The results also suggested strongly that both business and education majors had intentions to become an entrepreneur, although the model was more predictive with the business majors. Overall, the findings indicated that teaching reasonable risk taking and creativity in educational programs may be productive means to fostering entrepreneurial intentions among college students.

Born, Not Made: The Entrepreneurial Personality

$40

Books, magazine articles, and educational programs on entrepreneurship are all based on the idea that anyone can be an entrepreneur—that entrepreneurs are made, not born. Well, maybe not. In a study of 234 CEOs funded by the Kauffman Foundation, James L. Fisher and James V. Koch came up with a surprising conclusion: Some individuals are simply more naturally fitted to become entrepreneurs than others. They are pre-wired. Because of heredity, some people are much more likely to become successful entrepreneurs or pursue entrepreneurial strategies within a corporate setting profitably. By recognizing that, this book will significantly improve corporate selection processes, strengthen entrepreneurship programs, and boost the confidence of aspiring entrepreneurs through invaluable insights.Among other things, Fisher and Koch show that true entrepreneurs not only see the world differently—they act differently. Compared with corporate managers, for example, they are more confident, more decisive, more likely to upset the apple cart, and more energetic. They love to compete but are notable for the partnerships they are able to fashion with friend and foe alike. Such conclusions are remarkable. Why? Because they are based on the only empirical comparison study yet conducted on entrepreneurship. The insights are not based on personal opinion or case studies but on valid and reliable personality indicators.Because the book shows that certain kinds of people will find it much easier to found successful companies than others, it has many practical applications. It will help organizations fit the right people into jobs requiring an entrepreneurial bent. It will challenge corporations to hire entrepreneurial CEOs who will transform businesses rather than maintain the status quo. And it will speak directly to entrepreneurs and those contemplating starting a business, who will learn if they have the right stuff to start and sustain a business. In short,

Excerpt: Walter Francis O’Malley (October 9, 1903 August 9, 1979) was an American sports executive who owned the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers team in Major League Baseball from 1950 to 1979. He served as Brooklyn Dodgers chief legal counsel when Jackie Robinson broke the racial color barrier in 1947. In 1958, as owner of the Dodgers, he brought major league baseball to the West Coast, moving the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and coordinating the move of the New York Giants to San Francisco at a time when there were no teams west of Missouri. For this, he was long vilified by Brooklyn Dodgers fans. However, neutral parties describe him as a visionary for the same business action, and many authorities cite him as one of the most influential sportsmen of the 20th century. His detractors who say that he was not a visionary, but instead a man who was in the right place at the right time, still regard him as the most powerful and influential owner in baseball after moving the team. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame for his contributions to and influence on the game of baseball. O’Malley’s Irish father, Edwin Joseph O’Malley, was politically connected. Walter, a University of Pennsylvania Salutatorian, went on to obtain a Juris Doctorate, and he used the combination of his family connections, his personal contacts, and both his educational and vocational skills to rise to prominence. First, he became an entrepreneur involved in public works contracting, and then he became an executive with the Dodgers. He progressed from being a team lawyer to being both the Dodgers’ owner and president, and he eventually made the business decision to relocate the Dodgers franchise. Although he moved the franchise, O’Malley is known as a businessma… More:

Started in 1986 by the long serving member of parliament for Kitutu Chache, the late Dr. Z. T. Onyonka.Initiatilly it was a primary boys boarding admitting pupils from standard Three to eight. In 1989 the school expanded to include the secondary wing which admitted its first batch of students in forms one and two that year. The form twos however were not allowed to proceed to form three the following year as their performance was perceived to be weak. The Academy was an academic giant for some time, for example in 1992, the first K.C.S.E exam sat, the school emerged top twenty best in the country with Richard Anyegah Gitaga as the leading candidate followed closely by Leanard Otwori Juma. From then the schools attracted students from all over the country and beyond. Good performance continued for a time until in 1996. Decline in academic standards visited the school immediately after the death of the proprietor Dr Hon Z. T. Onyonka in 1996. However, inept financial and academic leadership drove it to almost financial ruin. It was bought in 2001, after the death of Onyonka, by an educational entrepreneur of Indian origin. The school has undergone several changes, it stopped admitting boarding students and became a mixed secondary school. Many of the students and pupils who schooled at the academy have excelled in various fields both within and outside the country. Head teachers Mosocho Aca… More:

Indian Entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley: The Making of a Transnational Techno-Capitalist Class

Indian Entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley: The Making of a Transnational Techno-Capitalist Class

$104.95

Written by Monica Biradavolu (a sociologist at Yale University), this innovative study examines the emergence and growing power of a new group of immigrant Indians to the United States: the transnational techno-capitalist class of entrepreneurs operating at the upper echelons of the hi-tech industry in Silicon Valley and Bangalore.Imbibing the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley, recognizing the importance of building strong networks, and relying upon their educational qualifications, professional credentials and powerful yet invisible family support, Indians are playing a central role in redefining what it means to be an ‘immigrant entrepreneur’ from a ‘developing country’. These powerful actors are negotiating on their own terms and forging their own transnational space in the global software industry to become a transnational capitalist class, with allegiance to global capitalism and a political project of pushing the ideas and ideals of capitalism in both their ‘home’ and ‘adopted’ countries. This an important book for those in ethnic and immigrant studies.

Intruding on Academe: The Assertion of Bureaucratic Control in Illinois

Intruding on Academe: The Assertion of Bureaucratic Control in Illinois

$1.99

In this fascinating, theoretically informed case study of policy making, Jack R. Van Der Slik demonstrates partisan politics in action in Illinois. Specifically, he shows how major changes in governing state universities were enacted over the objections of members of the higher education community, who preferred to maintain the status quo.            In 1991, Republican Governor Jim Edgar, enthusiastically aided by Lieutenant Governor Bob Kustra, began a political effort to decentralize the “system of systems,” which had governed state universities since the 1960s. Despite partisan defeat of their plan in 1993, Edgar and Kustra managed to neutralize support for the status quo in the educational community. After their 1995 landslide reelection, which brought about Republican majorities in both houses of the legislature, Edgar and Kustra were so successful in achieving their goals that they actually had to restrain the legislature’s enthusiasm for decentralization: the legislature wanted to extend decentralization to community colleges.            To account for these policy shifts, Van Der Slik interviewed twenty-five significant players from the executive branch of Illinois government, from the legislature, and from the educational community. Grounding his study theoretically, he compared his findings to previous studies in American policy making: Jack Kingom’s 1984 notion of the crucial role of the “policy entrepreneur”; arguments in 1993 by Frank R. Baumgartner and Bryan D. Jones that public policies are inherently unstable andthat discoverable phenomena can account for policy eruption; and research in 1995 by Charles O. Jones covering presidential transitions from Kennedy to Reagan.            To a remarkable degree, the political

He was also a well-known tea and coffee merchant and a general business entrepreneur. A fervent Christian, he campaigned throughout his life for the temperance movement in Britain, for the reduction of taxes on publishing, and was a social reformer who recognised the importance of education in improving the life of the working class, and whose many publications, both magazines and books, brought learning and culture to the masses. In his final years Cassell, seeing the business opportunities being opened up by the development of artificial light, set up an oil distillation works at Hanwell. Despite his efforts the venture came to nothing and, though no serious financial loss was sustained, the project was a great drain on his time and energy.
