 A Pioneering And Independent Spirit

A Pioneering And Independent Spirit

$32.19

A Pioneering and Independent Spirit chronicles the history of San Jos State University’s School of Library and Information Science as it evolved from a small school-library training program established in 1928 into the largest MLIS degree program in the world. Set within the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, the School’s history reflects the dramatic social, economic, and educational changes resulting from the information revolution in the 20th century. From the use of closed circuit television in the 1950s to microfilmed course readings in the 1970s to the delivery of courses on the World Wide Web, the School harnessed these new technologies to keep librarianship relevant as a profession and to make education for the field as widely available as possible. In March 2009, they took another bold step by going completely online. This means that now they are not only the world’s largest MLIS program, but the first wholly virtual one. Based on extensive research in the university’s records, Dr. Hansen shows how the School’s tradition of entrepreneurship and innovation shaped its development between 1928 and 2009 and pays tribute to the administrators, faculty, and students who contributed to the School’s success.

 Academic entrepreneurship in instructional technology.

Academic entrepreneurship in instructional technology.

$49.99

Academic entrepreneurship refers to any of several types of entrepreneurial activities conducted by university faculty, students, or employees. The activities it typically describes, however, are either the commercialization of university research via patenting and licensing to existing firms, or new firm formation. Academic entrepreneurship has increased dramatically in the last several decades, particularly in disciplines such as biomedical engineering, computer science, and medicine.;Little is understood about academic entrepreneurship in education, however. Key questions include the identity of the entrepreneurs, what sort of products they are creating, the challenges they face, their motivation, their resource requirements, and the role of the university in the entrepreneurial process. This study sought to answer these questions by examining the experience of 5 academic entrepreneurs in instructional technology who had created new firms. Instructional technologies were defined as a product or service with an educational, instructional, or learning goal that used technology to achieve that goal.;Findings reveal that academic entrepreneurs in instructional technology tended to be male, both tenured and non-tenured, and active researchers, and they created a variety of types of products for different audiences. They were motivated by having a tangible impact on real-world issues. Although this study did not rigorously examine the personality characteristics of those profiled, the characteristics of proactiveness, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and tolerance for ambiguity were most apparent among those interviewed. Time was the most critical resource for them, followed by human capital and money. This study found that they key challenges for these entrepreneurs were finding sufficient time to carry out the entrepreneurial endeavor; identifying an appropriate marketing, sales and distribution channel; the adoption of technology by customers and in some cases, the

African Americans in the Post-Emancipation South: The Outsiders' View

African Americans in the Post-Emancipation South: The Outsiders’ View

$24

Historians and other scholars often use first-hand accounts, including contemporary observations, as sources for study of the past. These types of sources are valuable, especially when used in conjunction with other documents, as they help us to approximate the past. This study uses these types of sources to attain glimpses of African American life in the post-emancipation South. Spanning from the 1860s through the New Deal, this study incorporates a broad cross-section of the views of European travelers and Euro-American visitors from the North, based upon travel books as well as articles and essays from periodicals and scholarly journals. The study synthesizes the outsiders’ observations and assesses their summaries’ overall validity for increasing our understanding of the lives of blacks in the post-emancipation South. Furthermore, these accounts allow for a reconstruction of African American life and labor in the major aspects of black culture—religion, education, politics, criminal justice, employment and entrepreneurship, social life and status—of the times. The work is constructed in the context of contemporary anthropology, ethnography, psychology, and sociology.

EconoPower: How a New Generation of Economists Is Transforming the World

In 2006, the Nobel Peace Prize was for the first time awarded to an economist. Once ridiculed as the “dismal” science, economics has now emerged as the “imperial” science that influences every aspect of daily life, from politics to education to religion to Wall Street. Like an invading army, the science of Adam Smith is overrunning the whole of social science—law, finance, politics, history, sociology, environmentalism, religion, and even sports. In EconoPower, professional economist Mark Skousen shows how this is happening—and how economists are solving the world’s problems on both the individual and national level.EconoPower offers practical advice on personal financial matters—earning, saving, investing, and retiring—based on the breakthrough contributions of behavioral economists. Economics can change people’s lives and nations’ fortunes for better or for worse, he explains, depending on how closely they adhere to or violate basic principles. Those key principles include accountability, cost-benefit analysis, investments, and entrepreneurship. By understanding and incorporating these principles, better decisions will be made on individual, corporate, and government levels. To explain this thesis, the author offers analyses of key economists who have changed their views over time, an
