Born, Not Made: The Entrepreneurial Personality

Born, Not Made: The Entrepreneurial Personality

$40

Books, magazine articles, and educational programs on entrepreneurship are all based on the idea that anyone can be an entrepreneur—that entrepreneurs are made, not born. Well, maybe not. In a study of 234 CEOs funded by the Kauffman Foundation, James L. Fisher and James V. Koch came up with a surprising conclusion: Some individuals are simply more naturally fitted to become entrepreneurs than others. They are pre-wired. Because of heredity, some people are much more likely to become successful entrepreneurs or pursue entrepreneurial strategies within a corporate setting profitably. By recognizing that, this book will significantly improve corporate selection processes, strengthen entrepreneurship programs, and boost the confidence of aspiring entrepreneurs through invaluable insights.Among other things, Fisher and Koch show that true entrepreneurs not only see the world differently—they act differently. Compared with corporate managers, for example, they are more confident, more decisive, more likely to upset the apple cart, and more energetic. They love to compete but are notable for the partnerships they are able to fashion with friend and foe alike. Such conclusions are remarkable. Why? Because they are based on the only empirical comparison study yet conducted on entrepreneurship. The insights are not based on personal opinion or case studies but on valid and reliable personality indicators.Because the book shows that certain kinds of people will find it much easier to found successful companies than others, it has many practical applications. It will help organizations fit the right people into jobs requiring an entrepreneurial bent. It will challenge corporations to hire entrepreneurial CEOs who will transform businesses rather than maintain the status quo. And it will speak directly to entrepreneurs and those contemplating starting a business, who will learn if they have the right stuff to start and sustain a business. In short,

 Capturing the Political Imagination

Capturing the Political Imagination

Think tanks are proliferating. Although they operate independently of governments, many of these institutions, including the well-known Brookings Institution in the U.S. and the Institute for Economic Affairs in Britain, have considerable influence on political thinking and public policy. In this innovative work, Diane Stone develops several ideas about policy networks, epistemic communities and policy learning in relation to think tanks. Dr Stone argues that since think tanks are not involved in the details of policy implementation or the formal decision-making process, it is irrelevant to try and investigate their direct influence on policy. Instead it is necessary to look at how think tank scholars interact with decision-makers, and to examine the more subtle processes of agenda setting and policy entrepreneurship. While much has been written on the formal arenas of politics – executives, legislatures, elections and bureaucracies – this is the first book to uncover the vital but informal role played by think tanks in policy innovation and the diffusion of ideas among policy elites. By comparing British and American think tanks (both large and small) Diane Stone broadens our understanding of the causes and consequences of the growth of these organisations. She points out that American institutes benefit from far more generous foundation and corporate support, and that the institutional structure of the US government and the country’s weak political party system provide a more fragmented and open environment for interaction between think tanks and officials with political power. The book concludes with valuable reference material including a comprehensive listing of major think tanksin the US and Britain.

Curb Rights: A Foundation for Free Enterprise in Urban Transit

$18.95

The authors of this book say it’s time to rethink the fundamental structure of transit policy. The book focuses on street-based transit – buses, shuttles, and jitneys. The authors propose that urban transit be brought into the fold of market activity by establishing property rights not only in vehicles, but also in curb zones and transit stops. Market competition and entrepreneurship would depend on a foundation of what they call curb rights . By creating exclusive and transferable curb rights (to bus stops and other pickup points) leased by auction, the authors contend that American cities can have the best of both kinds of markets – scheduled (and unsubsidized) bus service and unscheduled but faster and more flexible jitneys. They maintain that a carefully planned transit system based on property rights would rid the transit market of inefficient government production and overregulation. It would also avoid the problems of a lawless market – cutthroat competition, schedule jockeying, and even curbside conflict among rival operators. Entrepreneurs would be free, able, and driven to introduce ever better service, revise schedules and route structures, establish connections among transit providers, facilitate passenger interchange, introduce new vehicles, and use new pricing strategies. And travelers would find public transit more attractive than they do now.

Economic Theory and Social Change: Problems and Revisions

Economic Theory and Social Change: Problems and Revisions

$150

This book is a discourse on modelling Man in a social context. Its focus is on economic main-stream theory in its capacity to handle basic problems such as uncertainty, social dynamics and ethics. The point of departure is a systematic critique of the specific methodology of economics and its axiomatic structure. The ultimate aim is to develop an economic theory for a socially sustainable society.Economic Theory and Social Change analyses the foundation of economic market theory in relation to its social implications. On rejecting the axiomatic structure of the market theory Hasse Ekstedt and Angelo Fusari analyse the concept of growth and uncertainty with respect to a more realistic modelling of man, The book also addresses central political problems and their potential solutions, including permanent unemployment, distribution of income, the interaction of real and financial growth, money and the credit system. In seeking objective values to help to obtain a socially sustainable society, the book traces a tentative revision of economic and social thought based on a deepening of some crucial features of modern economies and societies. These features include innovation, the connected flows of uncertainty, entrepreneurship, and their role in fuelling and characterizing economic growth and development. This book will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers of Economics, particularly to those focussing on Economic Theory and Political Economy.
