What Entrepreneurship Means

What Means This? $9.58 While you might expect standard piano trio lines from Mike Cain, he doesn’t deliver them on What Means This? Rather, the threesome, joined on four tracks by percussionist Paul Hannah, actually interact with each other and through the material, extending themselves and doing more than just responding and reacting on cue. Drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith deserves much of the credit for this. His precise, attacking, subtle support allows Cain and bassist Anthony Cox to venture out and experiment without the compositions losing coherence or organization. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi Performers: Anthony Cox – Bass; Marvin “Smitty” Smith – Drums; Michael Cain – Piano; Mike Cain – Piano; Paul Hannah – Drums, Percussion |

What It Means to Be Left-Handed $11.98 It’s a little startling to realize just how many albums Adam Pierce has released under the Mice Parade name over the years, happily pursuing his muse from the time when post-rock was a buzzword to an era when it just might be about ready to become the next retro-revival flashpoint. What It Means to Be Left-Handed shows Pierce and company continuing to embrace a variety of artistic impulses that become their own enjoyable interpretations. “Kupanda,” the giddy opener featuring guest singer Somi, revels in its easy grace as well as providing a soft-landing point for both older fans and newer listeners; if it’s a bit much to say it’s a typical Mice Parade song, its nods to highlife guitar and hints of bossa nova ease are handled with equal adeptness. More rocked-up numbers like “In Between Times,” with its shuddering start and magnificent sea shanty-paced break, a showcase for Pierce’s distinct acoustic guitar sound as much as the percussion that he first became known for, and the equally breathless but flowing “Recover” have an equally immediate grace. In contrast, “Mallo Cup” might actually be too straightforward a rocker, sounding less distinct than most of the songs around it on the album and more like a bit of a Swervedriver B-side from 1993, but the piano-led “Tokyo Late Night” provides a nice contrast at capturing the paradoxical feeling of contemplative energy that defines the band. The distant, melancholic tones at the start of “Couches and Carpets” and the piano punctuating “Old Hat” are other highlights on an album that concludes with a cover of Tom Brosseau’s “Mary Anne,” perhaps the best aural definition of a sweet-sounding bummer around. Short pieces like the electronic tones of “Pond” and the quick shimmer of “Remember the Magic Carpet” may only be snippets but are all the more enticing for that. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Jeremy Backofen – Help |

This Means Forever $6.38 The immediate moment the vocals hit during the intro tune, “Shaken,” every die-hard Dischord fan will be contemplating if Guy Picciotto has finally made good on his promise, has had enough of the sound of guitars, and has found solace in the frantic world of breakcore. Right at home with releases by Tigerbeat6 captain Kid 606 and fellow teammates Rip Off Artist and Cex, This Means Forever take cues from the frantic cut-and-paste philosophies and sense of humor the label is known for, but the warmth of the production throughout is what gives Drop the Lime a sense of distinction from his labelmates. Using children’s sound effects, circus music, strings, and interludes from cartoon music soundtracks (and everything else that could stir up a child’s nightmare), This Means Forever is a soundtrack to a surreal, demented carnival where everything that could possibly go wrong, does. It’s brutal and punishing from start to finish, with the only relief found in the interludes. A very impressive debut record, indeed. ~ Rob Theakston, Rovi Performers: Andriu – Composite; Luca Venezia – Vocals |

Driving Social Change: How to Solve the World’s Toughest Problems $27.95 Has the role of the social entrepreneur been glorified as the primary driver of social breakthrough? Have we neglected the important role that all change agents play? What must be done to create the networks that create so many breakthroughs? How does the breakthrough cycle actually work? How do we strengthen the infrastructure that supports social change organizations in their quest? Driving Social Change is the ultimate introduction to the many steps needed to challenge and replace the prevailing wisdom.Based on the latest research from author, professor, and Washington Post online columnist Paul C. Light, Driving Social Change confronts head-on the seemingly eternal questions of solving tough, even intractable, social problems. Starting with the definition of social entrepreneurship as a powerful driver of social change, it goes well beyond the concept to a more detailed assessment of the “breakthrough” cycle with several other drivers. Along the way, the book focuses on the need to protect past social breakthroughs from complacency and counterattack. If our purpose is to change the world, writes Light, we must concentrate on every driver possible, not just the ones we can see. To that end, the book highlights alternative paths to creating social breakthrough and provides actionable advice, exploring:Strategies to broaden the definition of social entrepreneurshipTactics to build strong social organizations and networksDynamic methods to respond to constant economic and social changeThe journey from initial commitment to a world of justice and opportunityAs much as social entrepreneurship is a wondrous, inspirational act, even more extraordinary is the creation of durable social impact through whatever means necessary. Driving Social Change tells us that we should be less concerned about the tools of agitation and more concerned about the disruption and replacement of the status quo.Holding |

Entrepreneurial Imperative: How America’s Economic Miracle Will Reshape the World (and Change Your Life) $1 In 2004, Carl Schramm, president of the Kauffman Foundation, the world’s leading foundation for entrepreneurship, published a groundbreaking essay with a radical premise: that Americans literally have no conception of the secret that truly underlies our economic success, and that for the United States to survive and continue to lead the world’s economy, it is imperative we learn to understand and employ that secret. The secret that has led the American economy to become the world’s strongest? Our unparalleled skill as entrepreneurs. As Schramm compellingly shows in this sweeping manifesto, entrepreneurship alone—not anything else—can give America the necessary leverage to remain an economic superpower. Not technology, since everyone now has the same technology, or access to it. Not education—we are years behind other nations in this area. Not basic manufacturing, long since moved overseas from the United States. And not capital markets, now truly global entities. Drawing on detailed research conducted by the Kauffman Foundation and on his decades of experience as an entrepreneur himself and as a leader and mentor to other entrepreneurs, Schramm persuasively demonstrates in detail what this entrepreneurial imperative means for the way we run universities and foundations, lead companies, make personal job decisions, and even conduct our foreign affairs. The Entrepreneurial Imperative will change not only the way our government, corporations, and nonprofits operate, but also our day-to-day lives as working Americans. |
