The Development of University-Based Entrepreneurship Ecosystems

The Development of University-Based Entrepreneurship Ecosystems

$40

Entrepreneurship and innovation are increasingly viewed as key contributors to global economic and social development. University-based entrepreneurship ecosystems provide a supportive context in which entrepreneurship and innovation can thrive. In that vein, this book provides critical insight based on cutting-edge analyses of how to frame, design, launch, and sustain efforts in the area of entrepreneurship. Seven success factors were derived from an in-depth analysis of six leading, and very different, university-based entrepreneurship ecosystems in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. These seven success factors are: (1) senior leadership vision, engagement and sponsorship; (2) strong programmatic and faculty leadership; (3) sustained commitment over a long period of time; (4) commitment of substantial financial resources; (5) commitment to continuing innovation in curriculum and programs; (6) an appropriate organizational infrastructure; and (7) commitment to building the extended enterprise and achieving critical mass. Based on these success factors, the authors provide a series of recommendations for the development of a comprehensive university-based entrepreneurship ecosystem. This major assessment of how best to drive university-based entrepreneurship ecosystems is essential reading for anyone involved in higher education (particularly provosts, deans, and professors), government agencies concerned with socio-economic development, and all those concerned with helping entrepreneurship ecosystems to flourish.

Academic Entrepreneurship in Europe

Academic Entrepreneurship in Europe

$40

Academic Entrepreneurship in Europe Wright, M. Clarysse, B. Mustar, P. Lockett, A. This book advances our understanding of university spin-off creation and development in environments outside the high-tech clusters of the US. While there has been substantial university spin-off activity internationally in recent years, a number of major aspects are little understood. The authors argue that the nature of universities is changing as reduced public funding reflects a public debate on their role in society. An important aspect of this international phenomenon is an increased emphasis on the commercialization of university research and on academic entrepreneurship. These new ventures therefore involve the spinning-off of technology and knowledge generated by universities. The authors adopt a multi-level approach in their examination of university spin-offs. European case studies are specifically selected to reflect the diversity of the institutional environment. In particular, units of analysis involving universities, technology transfer offices, spin-off firms, finance providers and individual entrepreneurs and teams are extensively analysed in quantitative and qualitative studies. To conclude, policy implications for the future successful development of spin-offs are identified. This fascinating book will appeal to a wide-ranging audience including academics, policy makers, researchers and practitioners with an interest in academic entrepreneurship and university spin-offs, and, more generally, in business and management and entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship, Volume 9

Entrepreneurship, Volume 9

$99.95

Among the major ways researchers think about research topics and approaches, the lesson of these ten chapters by many of the new breed of European entrepreneurship researchers is that those values and world-views which have traditionally been the hallmark of the European approach, remain evident as the underpinnings of the new breed approach. In doing so, the field of entrepreneurship will grow in terms of the range of ideas, data sources, and techniques. It will also grow more competitive, initially through the addition of new people, but as their ideas begin to gain traction, as differing worldviews and approaches come to the fore, and perhaps sometimes into conflict. However, that sort of exchange, one which broadens each participant, is what science and academia is all about, and the new breed, through efforts such as the volume you are holding, are working to initiate that process.

Clusters, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Clusters, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

$62

This publication explores the success of major innovation and entrepreneurship clusters in OECD countries, the challenges they now face in sustaining their positions and the lessons for other places seeking to build successful clusters.  What are the key factors for cluster success?  What problems are emerging on the horizon? Which is the appropriate role of the public sector in supporting the expansion of  clusters and overcoming the obstacles?. The book addresses these and other issues, analysing seven internationally reputed clusters in depth: Grenoble in France, Vienna in Austria, Waterloo in Canada, Dunedin in New Zealand, Medicon Valley in Scandinavia, Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom, and Madison, Wisconsin, in the United States.  For each cluster, it looks at the factors that have contributed to its growth, the impact of the cluster on local entrepreneurship performance, and the challenges faced for further expansion.  It also puts forward a set of policy recommendations geared to the broader context of cluster development. This publication is essential reading for policy makers, practitioners and academics wishing to obtain good practices in cluster development and guidance on how  to enhance the economic impact of clusters.

International Differences in Entrepreneurship

International Differences in Entrepreneurship

$79

Often considered one of the major forces behind economic growth and development, the entrepreneurial firm can accelerate the speed of innovation and dissemination of new technologies, thus increasing a country’s competitive edge in the global market. As a result, cultivating a strong culture of entrepreneurial thinking has become a primary goal throughout the world. Surprisingly, there has been little systematic research or comparative analysis to show how the growth of entrepreneurship differs among countries in various stages of development. International Differences in Entrepreneurship fills this void by explaining how a country’s institutional differences, cultural considerations, and personal characteristics can affect the role that entrepreneurs play in its economy. Developing an understanding of the origins of entrepreneurs as well as the choices they make and the complexity of their activities across countries and industries are of central importance to this volume. In addition, contributors consider how environmental factors of individual economies, such as market regulation, government subsidies for banks, and support for entrepreneurial culture affect the industry and the impact that entrepreneurs have on growth in developing nations.

African American Economic Development and Small Business Ownership

African American Economic Development and Small Business Ownership

$161.93

Starting with the traditions of African American economic systems perpetuated during and after slavery to create their own institutions and enterprises, this study also reviews contemporary major policy initiatives intended to promote African American business ownership. The author uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods to examine the topic and to debunk the myth that African Americans do not have a history of entrepreneurship. The quantitative research in this book is unique in that it provides a detailed analysis of national samples of African American owned and white-owned businesses by industry and region. These industries include professional services; finance, insurance and real estate; manufacturing; and wholesaling. Characteristics of these firms and their owners are assessed to determine which ones are related to business survival. The study finds that the two key factors for achieving business success in African American-owned firms in these industries are the amount of the initial financial investment and the fact that the owner has graduated from college. For white-owned firms, the only factor that was found to be consistently important was start-up capital. Finally, the book sets forth recommendations for policymakers based on the findings of this study and on a comprehensive understanding of the history and dynamics of African American enterprises.

Fred Lebow was a dreamer, the kind of dreamer who pursued his dream and made it a reality. And the world is still reaping the rewards. So begins this uplifting chronicle of a humbly born Holocaust survivor who parlayed natural marketing smarts–and a vision–into a major position in recent American sports. He started the New York City Marathon, an event that transformed footracing from an elite, austere sport into a wildly applauded, attainable pursuit. Forging a path across the city’s five boroughs, the Marathon covers a daunting 26.2-mile course. Ron Rubin’s fascinating book tells how Lebow popularized the race. With a stroke of marketing wizardry he turned it into the world’s largest block party: a gritty mix of urban theater and kindly entrepreneurship. It honored the spirit of the moment, imbued competition with joy, and celebrated play. In so doing, it put winning within the realm of every man and woman became a race for all runners. Lebow mainstreamed the notion of marathoning into popular culture; some half million Americans now run marathons. Finally, the book describes how Lebow scored his greatest personal victory by racing in the marathon he had created even after being diagnosed with brain cancer.
